Is Executive Protection a Good Career?

A Perspective from Women Who Work Security and Executive Protection

We, at the Female Executive Protection Group, firmly believe that executive protection is an exceptional career choice, but only for certain people. High-level EP requires intelligence, responsibility, professionalism, and integrity. The EP industry is full of dedicated agents, both men and women, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of their clients. It's true executive protection or personal security comes with its share of challenges. The bright side is that the positive aspects like having incredible experiences, camaraderie, and opportunities for personal growth can counterbalance or outweigh the negative. It truly depends on the person. Let's get into it.

The Realities of the Job

Executive protection is not your typical 9-to-5 job... usually. Long hours, standing or sitting all day, and ever-changing schedules are par for the course. Also, a career in  EP often requires extensive travel, meaning you may find yourself away from your family and friends more often than you'd like. Such job demands can put a strain on family life, and we recommend having an open discussion with loved ones before embarking on and during the journey of this career path.

The financial aspect of contract executive protection work has a tendency of being unpredictable. Unless you're affiliated with a reputable agency, are a full-time employee, are unwavering in your minimum, or possess valuable connections, the pay might not always match the demanding nature of the job. Sadly, many agencies exploit the dedication of their agents, paying them far less than they deserve. The nature of the business and how many times a job gets subcontracted are also reasons why the pay isn't always the best. We would advise to never accept anything under $45/hour, unless... well, you just want to.

From constant vigilance and adapting to changing environments to handling high-stress situations and extensive training, the job demands unwavering dedication and versatility. Agents must be prepared for both active engagement and periods of downtime, irregular schedules and extended travel that can impact personal life. Upholding discretion and professionalism, dealing with potential legal implications and public attention, further adds to the complexity of the role. Yet, for those who possess the necessary attributes and find fulfillment in safeguarding others, the challenges are outweighed by the rewarding nature of protecting lives and forging meaningful connections with clients and fellow professionals.

The Pros That Make It Worthwhile

Despite the challenges, there are numerous reasons why executive protection can be a gratifying profession. The most prominent of all is the sense of purpose it offers - protecting someone from danger is a responsibility that truly matters. The knowledge that our actions contribute to safeguarding lives and ensuring the well-being of our clients is very rewarding. We all want to work in a field that makes a difference. Most of us in the industry are repulsed by the idea of pushing paper to fill the pockets of a greedy CEO day in and day out.

Working in executive protection also fosters strong connections with various professionals from agency managers, drivers, hotel staff, to local police. The collaborative nature of the job allows us to learn from each other and build lasting professional relationships.

The gear we use is an undeniable perk. Some of us in the industry become, how do we say this nicely, "obsessed" with products that help us in the EP field. We get to train with and use advanced communication devices, state-of-the-art security equipment, firearms, body armor and more.

The People, Experiences, and the Industry

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this profession is the opportunity to meet extraordinary individuals from diverse backgrounds. Whether it's successful business leaders, renowned artists, or political figures, the people we encounter often leave a lasting impression. Also, the experiences that come with executive protection are unparalleled. Working in various locations and situations presents us with a unique perspective on the world.

The executive protection industry is like one big professional family. We share a strong sense of camaraderie with our fellow agents, and the support network within the community is comforting and valuable. On the downside, this familial dynamic can sometimes lead to disagreements, unfair treatment, favoritism, and power struggles. Because there are so few women in the field, women can be a bit more sensitive to new females in the field because it can affect demand and pay. Luckily, FEPG strives to bring awareness to the public on how women are just as capable as their male counterparts to perform personal security for clients. This means there will be more jobs for women in executive protection.

Financial Aspect

Despite the downsides, the financial rewards in this field can be astonishing for those who thrive in it. Some female agents in the field are so in demand demand that their minimum is $750 a day. This figure represents a higher end of the pay spectrum for women in the industry. We have found $500-$600 a day is considered to be the middle of the road. We believe all females should have a minimum they work for and to not budge. We say this because there are so few women in this field that many companies and agencies will be forced to comply with the minimums in order to get any cut at all.

Whether executive protection is a good job, depends entirely on the individual's passion, training, schedule flexibility, marketability, and determination. We, at the Female Executive Protection Group, firmly believe that the pros outweigh the cons.
